My Take by Stephanie Mann

Empty stage at the Icehouse, Mpls, MN

In retrospect, the show was just as advertised, I however realized that I lost all contact with any situation where Mr. Stokely Williams would appear as the drummer and not the singer.

This event wasn’t locally advertised, the advertisement seen on Mid America Talent post. I had to research to see if it was indeed true

Looking back it was all nostalgia, wanting my Minneapolis to re-capture its identity, it seemed more like a dream to want to hear sonnets from Stokely, he is a capture of a time that is no longer Minneapolis.

The very best of the culture of Minneapolis has not been well preserved, the city itself has not been the priority of representation lately.

I see now that in the dimming of the musical and culture scene, that was an interwoven industry that sustains, restaurants, businesses, fashion, entertainment. This eco system inspires locals, and travelers to unite under the haze of a days work.

The Icehouse hosted the event, and it was bombastic. The music and vibes were centered on Afro beat that blended different styles from Afro influenced, Caribbean, and hip-hop/rock.

Most of the songs was high energy, Stokely definitely showed off his musical versatility as a drummer.

I also met great company as I ventured on to the Icehouse patio to decompress for the high energy. The patio was another place were people talked and took pictures with their friends, it was awesome, it would had seemed so, if I wasn’t so much in my feelings.

If anything I was able to have a night out with my sister, and be supported in my disappointment, I was able to be counseled on how to see the bright side and reality by my Mom, and overall learned how to accept the day as it was, instead of what I wanted it to be.
